Violet (Vi) was born September 26, 1928, in Long Lake, SD. She was the daughter of Fred F and Elizabeth (Spitzer) Hoffman, youngest of eight children. She grew up on the family farm and homestead northwest of Long Lake. Vi was baptized at Hope Lutheran Church in McPherson County, SD. She was confirmed and took her first communion on June 21,1942, at St. James Lutheran Church in Leola, SD.
Vi attended elementary school in a one room schoolhouse one mile from the family farm. She studied to pass her GED tests at Northern State College to obtain her high school equivalent degree. Vi was 18 when she borrowed money to buy a typewriter and practiced on it nights after finishing her farm chores. She was hired as the deputy register of deeds for the county when she was 19 and held that job for 15 years. Vi then decided to run for office and served the following 10 years as register of deeds for McPherson County.
Violet was united in marriage to Harry E. Hoffman on October 16, 1949. at St James Lutheran Church in Leola. They farmed near Leola until 1972, when they moved to Jefferson, where they owned and operated the Coast to Coast store, retiring from that business in 1991. Vi worked part time from 1992-2014 as secretary for the Jefferson city offices.
Vi is well known for her loving smile, tremendous organizational and documentation skills and constant focus on taking care of the needs of others. She was a very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and graciously gave her time to serve the Lord in the choir, altar guild, church council and as Sunday school teacher and secretary of the Fellowship Society. She tirelessly volunteered throughout the community with involvement in older adult ministry for Iowa District West and as a resident advocate at Perry Lutheran Home and Regency Park in Jefferson.
Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, reading and gardening as she maintained an always beautiful flower garden, continuing the legacy of her mother’s “green thumb”. She was a master quilter, also taking after her mother’s passion as a seamstress, and created numerous award-winning quilts.
Vi enjoyed living life to the fullest and sharing it with her loving husband Harry at her side for 66 years. They loved to travel together and enjoyed trips to the Black Hills of SD, Sun City, AZ, and all over the US as well as a special trip to Germany. Vi also accompanied her mother on a trip she won to New York, Florida and Puerto Rico.
Vi is survived by her brother-in-law Clarence (Lynn) Hoffman; sisters-in-law Vera (Walter) Job and Elsie (Werner) Hoffman; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband Harry; mother and father Fred and Elizabeth Hoffman; sisters Hilda (Art) Nitsche and Lillian (Richard) Nitsche; brothers Herbert (Eva), Werner (Elsie), Erwin (Esther), Walter (Elenora), Gerhard (Ella); and brothers-in-law Art (Ruth), Luther (Delores) and Leo (Delores); and nephews Dale Hoffman, Stan Hoffman and Allen Nitsche.
